Vitamin B6 is one of 8 different vitamins known collectively as the ‘Vitamin B Complex’.
Each of these B vitamins have their own benefits and uses, and we wanted to provide a bit of information around why we chose the ones that made it into our liposomal children’s multivitamin, beginning with Vitamin B6.
What is Vitamin B6?
Contributing to the formation of new red blood cells, which carry oxygen through the body, Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is a big player in the immune system.
Vitamin B6 is water soluble, which means that the body does not store it in fat cells and therefore regular dietary intake or supplementation is required to maintain optimal levels.
What does it do in the body?
Vitamin B6 is mainly responsible for:
- the formation of red blood cells to transport oxygen throughout the body
- the formation of genetic material (DNA and RNA)
- metabolising of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates for energy
- immune system functioning
- fetal and infant brain development
- creating neurotransmitters
What are common symptoms of deficiency?
- skin rashes (also known as seborrheic dermatitis)
- a weakened immune system
- increased feelings of anxiety, depression, and irritability
- cracked or sore lips
- glossitis (a swollen, smooth, inflamed tongue)
- fatigue (low energy)
- pain or tingling in the hands and feet
- seizures
What form of B6 is in Mighty Kids Multivitamin?
One of the most important factors in effective supplementation is the form of the vitamin or mineral being used. The term bioavailability refers to the body’s ability to actually absorb and use nutrients. Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) from food and most supplements is converted into active pyridoxal phosphate in the liver. However, we sourced Vitamin B6 already in the form of pyridoxal phosphate (P-5-P) which does not require metabolic conversion, further increasing bioavailability and absorption. In simple terms, the P-5-P B6 in Mighty Kids is ready for your body to use without needing to be processed by the liver.
Mighty Kids Multivitamin contains 10.5% of the Vitamin B6 NRV per age 2-4 dose, and 21% of the Vitamin B6 NVR per age 5-12 dose. However, it should be noted that liposomal supplements are proven to be up to 12 times more bioavailable than non-liposomal, and there is increased bioavailability in the P-5-P form of Vitamin B6, so the amount used by the body will be much higher than from other supplements.
More information about liposomal supplements can be found here: The fascinating world of liposomal supplements – Mighty Kids (mightykidssupplements.co.uk) .
Mighty Kids Multivitamin uses an expertly formulated ratio that will help to ensure optimal levels. Vitamin B6 is easily obtained through diet, and so severe deficiencies in modern countries are rare. There is a limit to what can fit into a multivitamin to keep it within a manageable serving size, and for the reasons listed above, it was not necessary to include 100% of the NVR into this supplement.
