Every person- adult or child- needs to replenish lost minerals following a sickness bug.
You will feel much better, much faster if you take magnesium and a quality sea salt. Minerals are essential for replenishing electrolyte levels and supporting your body’s natural hydration.
Magnesium will also help blood sugar regulation.
If diarrhoea is the problem, colostrum could be the answer.
Your body will definitely let you know if you’re not hydrated. If you’ve been experiencing muscle cramping or high levels of thirst, include some minerals!
I will never forget when my oldest son was just 2 and had such an awful sickness bug, we ended up at A&E. The Dr pulled at his skin and said, “He’s becoming dehydrated; we need to give him a Dioralyte sachet & he’ll quickly come round.”
Following sickness or diarrhoea:
Our bodies (and our children’s) need the right balance of fluids and body salts to be able to perform essential functions and maintain health.
Including minerals will help hydrate faster and more effectively than plain water alone.
So how to do this?
I don’t advise dioralyte sachets as the ingredient list has a few unwanted additions (silicon dioxide, saccharin sodium).
But a good quality sea salt is perfect. I like the brand ‘Celtic sea salt’.
Like other types of salt, Celtic sea salt is mostly sodium chloride, but it has trace levels of magnesium, potassium, calcium, and iron.
Potassium is helpful to balance electrolytes too; good food sources are bananas, avocados, dried fruits, apples, and oranges.
How much salt for children?
Dioralyte sachets recommend children over 1 year take one sachet after each loose stool; you can take up to 5 sachets each day for up to 3 to 4 days.
1 sachet = 1/4 teaspoon of Celtic sea salt
And of course include in the usual daily dose of Mighty Kids Magnesium!
Another helpful and powerful tool when it comes to diarrhoea is bovine colostrum.
Studies on children concluded colostrum is effective in the treatment of acute diarrhoea and can be considered as adjuvant therapy in both viral and bacterial diarrhoea to prevent diarrhoea-related complications.
Many online farms sell fresh raw colostrum; if you buy a bottle, you can pour it into ice cube tests, and just a cube per day is all you need.
Then focus on boosting your immune system by consuming vitamins like D, A, E, Zinc and extra Mighty Kids Vitamin C to help you better fight off the infection and get back to normal. See this post for information on babies and toddlers Vitamin C requirements, and this post for a guide to taking high dose Vitamin C.
